Depo Provera & Sayana Press

If you are a regular user of Depo Provera, you will be offered a new contraception called SAYANA PRESS.

Sayana Press is a form of depot which can be self-administered every 13 weeks. It contains exactly the same hormone as depo-provera and therefore has the same side-effect profile, but can be given by the patient at home, making it more convenient.

Patients will be offered to switch at their next routine depo appointment with the nurse. At that time you will be given information about Sayana Press. If you choose to switch, you will be advised to cancel your future depo appointment and book a double appointment with the nurse. The nurse will contact you with information about your prescription prior to this appointment.

Once you and the nurse are happy that you can use the injectable safely, she will provide you with enough Sayana Press to last 1 year. Once you have used your last Sayana Press, you will need to book a nurse review appointment. At this review, a health check will be performed and further devices prescribed if appropriate.

Below is an instruction video on how to inject Sayana Press, in case you need a reminder when the time comes to inject it yourself:

Further information is available on:, and which also has more training videos for patients. Or you can download this step-by-step patient self-administration guide here
